"1000 Books Before Kindergarten" is an early literacy initiative designed to foster a love for reading in young children and prepare them for academic success.

The program encourages parents and caregivers to read aloud 1,000 books with their child before they enter kindergarten, which might sound daunting at first but is entirely achievable with just one book a day over three years.

This initiative emphasizes the importance of reading in developing language skills, expanding vocabulary, and nurturing imagination.

How it Works

  1. Pick up a booklet at the Colona District Public Library
  2. Check out books to read or read books from home!
  3. Log child's progress. Books read during storytime, at daycare or at preschool, all count!
  4. At each milestone, child will receive a prize:

                           100 books = Bookmark

                           200 books= Sticker

                           300 books= Bubbles

                           400 books = Slap Bracelet

                           500 books = Boardbook

                           600 books = Crayons

                           700 books = Playdough

                           800 books = Fingerpaint

                           900 books = Tote Bag

1,000 books = Picturebook and Certificate
